Whoa-I’m not suggesting you blanket your address book with your product or service promotions. Or that your purchase a mailing list from another company. Most recipients of this type of email will quickly trash this kind of advertising or it’s sent to the spam or junk mail folder.
E-mail is a simple way to keep in touch with people and potentially, an easy way to develop a network of loyal customers. So, include a strategy for permission-based emailing in your marketing plan and make your own mailing list. Quite simply, permission-based email marketing involves sending information and materials that your customers have, in some way, requested. We’ve all seen the sign-up sheets to receive updates on shows by our favorite artist or to receive additional information on a product or service……..This means email contact is made only with those who request it
Email is an easy, affordable, quick and direct way to distribute promotional information, special offers and product updates. You can tailor your email to the information needs of a specific customer. And your email promotional campaign can fit into your calendar and time-frame.
We know that return customers count for large share of your business. Emails can be sent to ensure your customers remember you and your business. But, what other kinds of messages should/could you send that will ensure your business is memorable and not annoying?
1. Thank you –For example: “Thanks for the terrific idea on…….. This works because: you are thanking someone, which always helps strengthen a relationship.
2. Useful information (non-promotional) – if you have a way people can save money, or learn something interesting, share it. This works because: you are helping others, for the purpose of providing information, with no ulterior motive (such as trying to sell your products or services).
3. Kudos –A typical message: “Amazing idea you had in the community forum.” This works because: you are offering sincere congratulations – always welcome – and strengthening relationships.
4. Personal – This one is tricky. The key is to connect with others in some way. If you send personal thoughts, make sure they are meaningful to the recipient. This works because: you’re showing your human side, and people connect with people.
5. Re-email – this means that you are forwarding a message you received from someone else. This works because: it shows that you respect an idea of someone else, which strengthens your bond with that person.
A work of caution, you can overdo it with email marketing but a targeted plan will ensure your customers bring repeat business and recommend your business to their network of friends!
