OTTAWA—Ottawa will match every dollar Canadians give to the relief effort in Haiti, the government said Thursday morning.
"Many Canadians are deeply concerned about the suffering and loss of life as a result of this catastrophe in Haiti," said Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation.
"Our government is prepared to match their contributions dollar for dollar," up to a maximum of $50 million.

Temp work is a great way for youth to get a foot in the door with a company in order to prove our excellent work ethic, knowledge and skill set, so that employers will see the benefits of keeping us on past a short-term contract. But temporary work isn’t as peachy as it may seem - particularly for our mental health.
A new Canadian study has found that employees who have been hired on short-term contracts demonstrate more signs of depression than workers with full-time positions. The…

The end of the recession has been widely reported throughout Canadian media within the past couple of months. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the resulting struggle to find jobs is over. Despite greater economic stability, the labour market requires more time to catch up. With unemployment rates up, many youth are sifting through their options and finding guidance from the employment professionals within their communities. That being said, many employment counsellors and agency…

Perhaps you’re currently attending high school or you’re a recent grad trying to decide whether or not you can afford college or university. Or maybe you’re enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution or have even finished up your undergrad. Whatever the case may be, I’m pretty sure we all agree that post-secondary education is very costly and simply put, student debt sucks. They mean that a part of our hard-earned cash that could have been spent on fun stuff like clothes and a car or…

The recession has certainly brought about economic challenges for many youth across Canada. So what have the changes been, if any, in terms of young peoples’ attitudes and needs while hunting for a job?
In a discussion with employment centre directors across Ontario, a variety of trends resulting from the current economic situation were noted. Participants came from across the province representing the big cities as well as rural and remote regions.
One manager of a youth…

Whether you’ve been laid off from your old job or you’re simply looking for something new, there are many key factors in finding work. And during these particularly challenging economic times, the quality of employment hunting skills becomes even more important. So what’s the key to unlocking the door to employment?
Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to this question. But you can definitely start by keeping positive. In the words of one Cross Canada Dialogues (CCD) survey…

Maybe you or your clients can relate to this quote from a young person hired through a work placement program: “I can’t take anything most formal training managers say seriously because I can’t relate to them. I just automatically in my mind shut people out if they talk to me in a way of knowing more than I do or better than I do, because they don’t know more. They might have a different understanding and different experiences than what I have but that doesn’t necessarily make them more…

Apparently a lot. The story all begins in downtown Montreal when two young dudes in their early 20’s started living the entrepreneurial dream. Their brainy idea was to use steam cleaners to vaporize old lumps of chewing gum off the ground – and off the properties of businesses like McDonald’s and the Sheraton hotel, who have been willing to pay them for their services! The inspiration? An episode of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs. Together, they combined funding forces to buy a steam…

In the Following the Success (FTS) project, completed recently by Hire Prospects and other partners, it was found that individual employer effort plays a significant role in the success of labour market access for marginalized youth. The project reports on original interview research and documents a group of Canadian employer ‘champions’ who have taken a proactive role in hiring youth who face multiple social barriers in the workforce.
The project found that certain employers are very…

Making ends meet can be quite a headache, particularly during difficult economic times. Paying for food, rent, transportation and the rest of that long list can really add up. Or perhaps you live with your parents, and just don’t have the same funds as you once did in years past (either from the ‘rents or as a result of your own hard work) to pay for stuff like clothes, travel and eating out at restaurants. It seems like, as a direct result of the recession, many of us are in the same…

According to recent reports by the Bank of Canada, dare I say it – the recession is OVER! Apparently, this may be the start of “improved financial conditions, firmer commodity prices and recovering consumer confidence.” I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling really confused, considering other recent reports in the media stating that the worst is yet to come!
So who is the Bank of Canada anyways? Is there a little man with a white beard sitting on all of Canada’s money, with the…

Whoa-I’m not suggesting you blanket your address book with your product or service promotions. Or that your purchase a mailing list from another company. Most recipients of this type of email will quickly trash this kind of advertising or it’s sent to the spam or junk mail folder.
E-mail is a simple way to keep in touch with people and potentially, an easy way to develop a network of loyal customers. So, include a strategy for permission-based emailing in your marketing plan and make…

You need to be very cautious when selecting a
resume writing service as anybody can put up a sign that they write resumes. In fact 1 company that secretly positions itself “#1” really sends the resumes abroad to be produced and produces very awful broken English resumes. Other companies providing
resume help deliver nothing more than a prettier format of what you have.
So here’s…
