What’s the Deal with Temp Jobs?

Temp work is a great way for youth to get a foot in the door with a company in order to prove our excellent work ethic, knowledge and skill set, so that employers will see the benefits of keeping us on past a short-term contract. But temporary work isn’t as peachy as it may seem - particularly for our mental health.A new Canadian study has found that employees who have been hired on short-term contracts demonstrate more signs of depression than workers with full-time positions. The study found…See More

Student Debt Sucks!

Perhaps you’re currently attending high school or you’re a recent grad trying to decide whether or not you can afford college or university. Or maybe you’re enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution or have even finished up your undergrad. Whatever the case may be, I’m pretty sure we all agree that post-secondary education is very costly and simply put, student debt sucks. They mean that a part of our hard-earned cash that could have been spent on fun stuff like clothes and a car or…See More

Positivity rules! How to stay optimistic when hunting for a new job.

Whether you’ve been laid off from your old job or you’re simply looking for something new, there are many key factors in finding work. And during these particularly challenging economic times, the quality of employment hunting skills becomes even more important. So what’s the key to unlocking the door to employment?Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to this question. But you can definitely start by keeping positive. In the words of one Cross Canada Dialogues (CCD) survey respondent “Stay…See More

What do Chewing Gum and Young Entrepreneurs Have in Common?

Apparently a lot. The story all begins in downtown Montreal when two young dudes in their early 20’s started living the entrepreneurial dream. Their brainy idea was to use steam cleaners to vaporize old lumps of chewing gum off the ground – and off the properties of businesses like McDonald’s and the Sheraton hotel, who have been willing to pay them for their services! The inspiration? An episode of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs. Together, they combined funding forces to buy a steam…See More

Bartering is the New Green

Making ends meet can be quite a headache, particularly during difficult economic times. Paying for food, rent, transportation and the rest of that long list can really add up. Or perhaps you live with your parents, and just don’t have the same funds as you once did in years past (either from the ‘rents or as a result of your own hard work) to pay for stuff like clothes, travel and eating out at restaurants. It seems like, as a direct result of the recession, many of us are in the same boat.I…See More

Is the Recession Really Over?!?

According to recent reports by the Bank of Canada, dare I say it – the recession is OVER! Apparently, this may be the start of “improved financial conditions, firmer commodity prices and recovering consumer confidence.” I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling really confused, considering other recent reports in the media stating that the worst is yet to come!So who is the Bank of Canada anyways? Is there a little man with a white beard sitting on all of Canada’s money, with the power to declare…See More

Is summer school so radical? Respondents speak out from the Cross Canada Dialogues Survey

Summer is supposed to be a time of relaxation and enjoyment – hanging out with friends, staying out late on warm summer nights and eating ice cream every other day. Right? But for some youth, there’s also responsibility that comes along with summer. Now that school’s out, it’s time to make some cash by working at a summer job. Unfortunately, this summer, job hunting has been more of a, shall I say, challenge? Don’t worry, I’m not going to use the R-word. I think we’re all on the same page here.…See More
